Native American Canoe Anchor, Frye Island, BCE
Contributed by Frye Island Historical SocietyDescription
As of 2020, there have been two canoe anchor stones found on Frye Island. This is a small (approximately 12” high) stone that was carved with an indentation to keep the rope from slipping off while the person was fishing. This anchor stone is small and light enough to have been transported in a canoe. It weighs 50 pounds. The anchor stone was found on the West side of the island near Beach 5.
